masculine · English origin
Dillon is an English given name with two possible origins. It may derive from the Irish surname Ó Duilleáin, itself of uncertain meaning, brought into use as a given name following the common English-speaking practice of adopting surnames as forenames. Alternatively, it is sometimes treated as a variant of Dylan, the Welsh name rooted in the element dylan meaning sea or tide. The spelling Dillon became widely familiar in part through the long-running American television series Gunsmoke, whose central character was Marshal Matt Dillon.
