Ditte is a Danish and Norwegian pet form of Dorothea, which derives from the Greek Dorothea, a compound of doron (gift) and theos (god), yielding the meaning gift of God. It gained particular cultural prominence in Scandinavia through Martin Andersen Nexø's 1917 novel Ditte Menneskebarn (Ditte, Child of Man), which brought the name wide recognition across the region. Related forms include Dorte, Dorthe, and Dorotea, as well as the English Dorothy.
