Dorothy

Dorothy is an English form of the Greek name Dorothea, composed of the elements doron, meaning gift, and theos, meaning god, giving the overall sense of gift of God. The name gained wide Christian use in part through Saint Dorothea of Caesarea, a third-century martyr. Dorothy became especially prominent in the English-speaking world during the early twentieth century, famously associated with the protagonist of L. Frank Baum's 1900 novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Related forms include Dorothea, Theodora, and the diminutives Dot and Dottie.
