Dorothea is a Latinate form of the Greek name Dorothea, composed of the elements doron, meaning gift, and theos, meaning god, making it essentially a reversal of the elements found in Theodora. The name was borne by Saint Dorothea of Caesarea, a Christian martyr whose legends helped spread the name throughout medieval Europe. It became especially popular in German and Dutch-speaking regions and was widely used across English-speaking countries as well.
