Dot is an English diminutive of Dorothy, which traces back through Latin and Greek to the name Dorothea, composed of the Greek elements doron (gift) and theos (god), meaning essentially gift of God. It arose as a familiar pet form and became widely used as an independent given name in its own right, particularly during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. Dorothy and Thea are among the related forms sharing the same Greek roots.
