Dorthy

Dorthy is an English variant spelling of Dorothy, which derives from the Greek name Dorothea, composed of the elements doron, meaning gift, and theos, meaning god, giving the overall sense of gift of God. The name gained widespread use in the Christian world partly through Saint Dorothy, a fourth-century martyr venerated in the Western church. Dorthy follows the same pattern of informal respelling seen in other variants such as Dorthea and Dortha, and shares its roots with the reversed form Theodora.
