feminine · English origin
Doreen is an English feminine name that arose in the late nineteenth century, most likely as an elaboration of Dora using the popular Irish diminutive suffix -een, though some have also connected it to an anglicization of the Irish name Doireann. It gained widespread use in Britain and Ireland during the early twentieth century, helped in part by Edna Lyall's 1894 novel of that name. Related forms include Dorene and the shorter Dora, which itself derives from Greek roots meaning gift.
