Dora originated as a short form of names containing the Greek element doron, meaning gift, most commonly Dorothy, Theodora, or Dorothea. It has been used as an independent given name across much of Europe since at least the nineteenth century, gaining particular popularity in English-speaking countries during the Victorian era. The name appears in literature and popular culture, including as the childlike first wife of David Copperfield in Charles Dickens's 1850 novel.
