Doroteia is the Portuguese form of Dorothea, a Latinized adaptation of the Greek name Dorothea, composed of the elements doron, meaning gift, and theos, meaning god, giving the overall sense of gift of God. The name is the feminine counterpart of Theodoros, constructed from the same roots in reverse order. Saint Dorothy, a fourth-century Christian martyr, helped establish the name's enduring popularity across Europe.
