Dolly is an English pet form of Dorothy, which itself derives from the Greek name Dorothea, composed of the elements doron, meaning gift, and theos, meaning god, giving the overall sense of gift of God. The name has been in use as an independent given name in English-speaking countries since at least the eighteenth century. It gained widespread cultural familiarity through the country music icon Dolly Parton, as well as the famous cloned sheep named in her honor in 1996. Related forms include Dorothy, Dora, and Dorothea.
