Dolores is a Spanish feminine name derived from the Latin word dolor, meaning pain or sorrow. It is a short form of María de los Dolores, meaning Mary of Sorrows, a title of the Virgin Mary referring to the seven sorrows of her life as described in Catholic tradition. The name spread widely throughout the Spanish-speaking world and gained some use in English-speaking countries during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.
