Edmund

Edmund is an Old English name composed of the elements ead, meaning wealth or fortune, and mund, meaning protection, giving the overall sense of wealthy protector. It was borne by several Anglo-Saxon kings, most notably Edmund I of England and the martyred Saint Edmund of East Anglia, whose veneration kept the name in widespread use after the Norman Conquest. Edmund remains the standard English and German form, while Polish uses the same spelling but with distinct pronunciation; cognates include Eadmund, the archaic Old English spelling, and the Latinized Edmundus.
