Edmund

Edmund is an Old English name composed of the elements ead, meaning wealth or fortune, and mund, meaning protection, together conveying the sense of a wealthy protector. It was borne by several Anglo-Saxon kings, most notably Saint Edmund of East Anglia, a ninth-century martyr whose veneration spread widely across medieval England. The name remained in use after the Norman Conquest and was later carried by figures such as Edmund Ironside and the poet Edmund Spenser. Cognate forms include the German and Polish Edmund, as well as the Latinized Edmundus and the contracted English variant Ed.
