feminine · English origin
Ellen is an English and northern European form of Helen, itself derived from the ancient Greek name Helene, whose root meaning is debated but is often connected to the Greek word for torch or light, or possibly linked to Selene, the moon goddess. The name spread widely through medieval Europe largely through the cult of Saint Helena, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great, who was venerated for her role in locating Christian holy sites in Jerusalem. Ellen became especially popular in the British Isles and Scandinavia as a vernacular adaptation of Helen and Eleanor. Related forms include Helen, Helena, Eleanor, Elen, and Elaine.
