Emma is a Germanic name derived from the element ermen or irmin, meaning whole or universal, which was also used in compound names such as Ermintrude and Ermengard. It was popular among medieval European nobility, notably borne by Emma of Normandy, queen consort to both King Æthelred II of England and later King Cnut. The name was revived in the English-speaking world partly through widespread admiration for Jane Austen's 1815 novel whose heroine bears the name. Related forms include Irma, Irmgard, and Emmeline.
