Emma

Emma derives from the Germanic element ermen or irmin, meaning "whole" or "universal," which appeared in compound names and was later used independently. It was borne by several medieval queens and noblewomen, most notably Emma of Normandy, the eleventh-century queen consort of both England and Denmark, which helped spread the name across Europe. The name enjoyed a strong revival in the English-speaking world during the nineteenth century, boosted in part by Jane Austen's 1815 novel whose heroine bears the name.
