Freya derives from Old Norse Freyja, meaning lady or mistress, from the Proto-Germanic root frawjō. She was the principal goddess of love, fertility, beauty, and war in Norse mythology, and her name was so closely associated with the divine that the word for woman in several Scandinavian languages, such as Swedish fru, shares the same root. Friday takes its name from her through the Old English Frigedæg. Modern variants and related forms include Freja, Freia, and Frøya.
