Judas

Judas is the Greek and Latin form of the Hebrew name Yehudah, meaning praised or he will be praised, derived from the root yadah. The name was borne by several figures in the New Testament, most notably Judas Iscariot, the apostle whose betrayal of Jesus made the name infamous throughout the Christian world, as well as Judas Maccabaeus, the Jewish leader celebrated in the deuterocanonical Books of Maccabees. Because of its association with betrayal, Judas fell almost entirely out of use in Christian cultures, while its cognate forms Judah and Jude remained in circulation.
