Jude

Jude is the English form of the Latin Iudas, itself from the Greek Ioudas, which derives from the Hebrew name Yehudah, meaning praise or he will be praised, from the root yadah. In the New Testament, the name is borne by one of the twelve apostles as well as by Judas Iscariot, and the distinction between the forms Jude and Judas developed in English partly to differentiate the apostle from the betrayer. The name gained wide cultural recognition through Thomas Hardy's novel Jude the Obscure and the Beatles song Hey Jude. Related forms include Judah, Judas, Yehudah, and the feminine Judith.
