Judy

Judy is an English short form of Judith, which derives from the Hebrew name Yehudit, meaning "woman of Judea" or "Jewish woman," itself a feminine form of Yehudah (Judah). The name gained widespread use in the English-speaking world partly through the biblical figure Judith, the heroine of the deuterocanonical Book of Judith. Judy became especially popular in the mid-twentieth century and is strongly associated with actress and entertainer Judy Garland. Related forms include Judith, Judi, and the Hebrew Yehudit.
