feminine · Danish origin
Lene is a Scandinavian and German short form of Helene, which derives from the ancient Greek name Helene, itself possibly connected to the Greek word helene meaning torch or corposant, or alternatively linked to Selene, the goddess of the moon. The name became widespread throughout Europe through the cult of Saint Helena, mother of the Roman emperor Constantine the Great, who according to tradition discovered the True Cross in Jerusalem. Lene is the most common contracted form used in Denmark and Norway, while the fuller form remains popular across the Germanic-speaking world. Related forms include Lena, Lena, Helena, and Elena.
