Madeline is an English form of Magdalene, derived from the Greek Magdalēnē, meaning "of Magdala," referring to the ancient town on the western shore of the Sea of Galilee. The name became widely used in the Christian world through its association with Mary Magdalene, a prominent figure in the New Testament.
