feminine · Biblical origin
Mara has roots in several distinct traditions. In its Hebrew origin, it derives from the root meaning bitter, appearing in the Book of Ruth when Naomi declares she should be called Mara rather than her own name to reflect her sorrow. In Slavic and Hungarian traditions it functions as a short form of Maria, itself from the same Hebrew source, and is borne widely across Croatian, Serbian, and Macedonian communities. The Latvian Māra is a separate figure rooted in Baltic mythology, associated with an earth goddess or protector of women and cattle. Related forms include Maria, Miriam, and Mary.
