Mariska

Mariska is a Hungarian and Dutch diminutive of Mária, itself the Latin and Greek form of the Hebrew name Miryam, whose meaning is debated but commonly interpreted as beloved, sea of bitterness, or drop of the sea. The name gained international recognition largely through Hungarian-American actress Mariska Hargitay, daughter of actress Jayne Mansfield. As a pet form, it belongs to a family of affectionate diminutives that includes Marika and Mariske. Mária, Maria, and Mary are the broader root forms from which it descends.
