Mariska

Mariska is a Hungarian and Dutch diminutive of Maria, itself the Latin and Greek form of the Hebrew name Miryam, whose meaning is debated but may derive from roots relating to "beloved," "rebellious," or "drop of the sea." As a pet form, it developed independently in Hungarian and Dutch naming traditions as an affectionate everyday variant of Maria. The name gained international recognition largely through Hungarian-American actress Mariska Hargitay. Related forms include Mária, Marie, and Marika.
