Margrete

Margrete is the Norwegian and Danish form of Margaret, which traces back through Latin Margarita and Greek Margaritēs to a word meaning pearl. The name ultimately derives from an ancient borrowing, possibly from Persian or a related Eastern source, referring to the precious gem. It was borne by Margrete I of Denmark, the powerful medieval queen who united the Scandinavian kingdoms under the Kalmar Union in 1397. Related forms include Margareta, Margarethe, and Margrethe.
