Margrete

Margrete is the Norwegian and Danish form of Margaret, ultimately derived from the Greek margaritēs, meaning pearl, which itself was borrowed from a Persian or Sanskrit source referring to the same lustrous gem. The name spread widely across medieval Europe through early Christian veneration of Saint Margaret of Antioch. Margrete has been borne by several Scandinavian royals, most notably Margrete I of Denmark, the powerful fourteenth-century queen who united the Scandinavian kingdoms under her rule.
