Margrethe

Margrethe is the Danish and Norwegian form of Margaret, ultimately derived from the Greek name Margarites, meaning pearl. The name passed into widespread European use through Latin Margarita and was borne by numerous medieval queens and noblewomen across Scandinavia. Among its most prominent bearers is Margrethe II, Queen of Denmark from 1972 to 2024. Related forms include Margareta, Margrete, and Märta.
