Merete

Merete is a Danish and Norwegian given name that developed as a medieval Scandinavian contracted form of Margareta, the Latin adaptation of Greek Margarites, meaning pearl. The name traveled into northern Europe through the widespread medieval veneration of Saint Margaret of Antioch, making it extremely popular across Scandinavia. It shares its ancestry with the many European cognates of Margaret, including Margit, Mette, and Grete, which arose through similar processes of phonetic reduction in the Nordic countries.
