Marjorie is an English and Scottish variant of Margery, itself a medieval French form of Margaret, which traces back through Latin Margarita to Greek margaritēs, meaning pearl. The name gained wide use in medieval Britain and was especially popular in Scotland, where it was borne by Marjorie Bruce, daughter of King Robert the Bruce, through whom the Stuart royal line descended. It enjoyed a strong revival in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries across English-speaking countries. Related forms include Margaret, Margot, Marguerite, Meg, and Greta.
