Marta is the form of Martha used across a wide range of European languages, ultimately derived from the Aramaic name Marta, meaning lady or mistress. The name became widely known through the New Testament figure Martha of Bethany, the sister of Mary and Lazarus, whose story appears in the Gospel of Luke.
