Mathijs

Mathijs is the Dutch form of Matthew, ultimately derived from the Hebrew name Mattityahu, meaning gift of God, from the elements mattan (gift) and yah (a shortened form of the divine name Yahweh). The name spread widely across Europe through the New Testament apostle and evangelist Matthew, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. Closely related forms include the English Matthew, the German Matthias, the French Mathieu, and the Scandinavian Mattias.
