Mathijs

Mathijs is the Dutch form of Matthew, ultimately derived from the Hebrew name Mattityahu, meaning gift of Yahweh, from the elements mattan, meaning gift, and Yah, a shortened form of the divine name. The name entered European languages through the Greek Matthaios and Latin Matthaeus, becoming widely popular across medieval Christendom due to the Apostle and Evangelist Matthew, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. Closely related forms include Mattijs, the Flemish Matthias, and the Frisian Mattijs, as well as the standard English Matthew and German Matthias.
