Matija

Matija is a South Slavic form of the Hebrew name Mattityahu, meaning gift of God or gift of Yahweh, composed of the elements mattan (gift) and Yah (a short form of the divine name). It entered Slavic languages through Latin Matthias and Greek Matthaios, and has been widely used in Croatia, Slovenia, and Serbia for centuries. The name shares its origin with Matthew, Matthias, Matteo, and Matyáš, all ultimately tracing back to the same Hebrew source.
