feminine · Russian origin
Nina has multiple independent origins. In European languages it arose chiefly as a short form of names ending in -nina, such as Antonina or Giannina, and spread widely across Russian, Italian, German, French, and Slavic naming traditions. Separately, in the Quechua and Aymara languages of the Andes, nina is a native word meaning fire, giving the name an entirely distinct indigenous South American heritage. The Latvian form Ņina represents an adapted spelling used in that language's orthographic conventions.
