Georgia

Georgia is the Latinate feminine form of George, ultimately derived from the Greek name Georgios, itself rooted in the Greek word georgos, meaning farmer or earthworker, from ge (earth) and ergon (work). The name has been used in the English-speaking world since at least the eighteenth century, partly popularized by the royal House of Hanover and the British kings named George. It is also associated with the American state of Georgia, which was named after King George II, and with the painter Georgia O'Keeffe, one of its most celebrated bearers. Related forms include Georgina, Georgiana, and the French Georgette.
