Georgiana is a Latinate feminine form of George, which derives from the Greek name Georgios, itself built on the elements georgos meaning farmer or earthworker, from ge (earth) and ergon (work). The name gained particular popularity in eighteenth- and nineteenth-century England, partly through aristocratic fashion, and is famously associated with Georgiana Cavendish, Duchess of Devonshire. It enjoyed wide use throughout the British Empire and appears in literature, notably as a character name in Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice. Related forms include Georgina, Georgia, and the French Georgienne.
