Pamella is an English variant spelling of Pamela, a name invented by the poet Sir Philip Sidney for a character in his prose romance Arcadia, published in 1590. Sidney likely coined it from Greek elements, possibly combining pan (all) with meli (honey), though the exact construction remains uncertain. The name gained wide popularity after Samuel Richardson used it for the heroine of his 1740 novel Pamela, or Virtue Rewarded. Related forms include Pamela, Pam, and Pamelia.
