Pim is a Dutch masculine given name that originated as a short form of Willem, the Dutch equivalent of William, which itself derives from the Old High German elements wil, meaning will or desire, and helm, meaning helmet or protection. It has been a familiar and independently used given name in the Netherlands for centuries. The name gained wider international attention in part through the Dutch politician Pim Fortuyn.
