Willem is the Dutch form of William, derived from the Old High German name Willahelm, composed of the elements wil, meaning will or desire, and helm, meaning helmet or protection. The name was introduced to England by the Normans and spread widely across Europe, producing numerous national variants. Willem has been borne by several Dutch kings and by the influential Dutch-born British monarch Willem III, known in English as William III of Orange.
