Robin

Robin is a medieval English and French diminutive of Robert, itself a Germanic name composed of the elements hrod (fame) and beraht (bright). The name gained widespread popularity in medieval England partly through the legendary folk hero Robin Hood, the outlaw archer of Sherwood Forest, as well as through association with the robin redbreast, a bird whose name derived from the same diminutive. It was long used predominantly as a masculine name but became increasingly common for girls throughout the twentieth century, particularly in English-speaking countries. Robyn is a frequent feminine spelling variant, while Robert, Rob, and Bob remain the broader family of cognates.
