Robin

Robin is a medieval English and French diminutive of Robert, itself derived from the Old High German elements hrod (fame) and beraht (bright). The name gained widespread popularity in medieval England partly through the legendary outlaw figure Robin Hood, whose tales circulated from at least the thirteenth century. It was historically used almost exclusively for males but shifted toward common use for females during the twentieth century, particularly in North America. Closely related forms include Rob, Bob, Robyn, and the Scandinavian cognate Robin, which traces the same Germanic roots.
