Rupert

Rupert is a Low German form of the Old High German name Hrodebert, composed of the elements hrod, meaning fame or glory, and beraht, meaning bright or shining, making the overall sense something like bright fame. The name was borne by Saint Rupert of Salzburg, a seventh-century missionary bishop who became the patron saint of Austria, which helped spread the name throughout the German-speaking world. It was introduced to England following contacts with Germanic Europe and remained in use among the aristocracy, notably through Prince Rupert of the Rhine, a royalist cavalry commander during the English Civil War. Robert and Ruprecht are closely related forms sharing the same Germanic roots.
