Rupert

Rupert is the English and Low German form of the Old High German name Hrodebert, composed of the elements hrod, meaning fame, and beraht, meaning bright. It is therefore a cognate of the more common Robert, sharing identical roots. The name was brought to England in the seventeenth century largely through the fame of Prince Rupert of the Rhine, a nephew of King Charles I who served as a Royalist cavalry commander during the English Civil War.
