masculine · Irish origin
Sean is an Irish form of John, itself derived from the Hebrew name Yohanan, meaning God is gracious. It entered Irish use as an adaptation of the Anglo-Norman Jehan, which was an Old French form of the Latin Iohannes. The name has been enormously popular in Ireland and among Irish diaspora communities worldwide, and has been widely adopted in English-speaking countries throughout the twentieth century. Closely related forms include Seán, the accented Irish spelling, as well as Shawn and Shaun, which are anglicized variants reflecting the same pronunciation.
