Stefan

Stefan is the German, Scandinavian, Dutch, Slavic, and Balkan form of Stephen, ultimately derived from the ancient Greek name Stephanos, meaning crown or wreath. The name spread widely across Europe through the veneration of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr, whose story is recorded in the Acts of the Apostles. It has been borne by numerous medieval rulers, including several kings of Serbia and Stefan the Great of Moldova. Closely related forms include Štefan in Slovak and Slovene, Ștefan in Romanian, Stefán in Icelandic, and the anglicized Stephen and Steven.
