masculine · Low German origin
Steffen is a Low German and Scandinavian form of Stephen, ultimately derived from the ancient Greek name Stephanos, meaning crown or wreath. The Greek root referred literally to a garland worn as a mark of honor or victory, and the name spread widely through Christian Europe largely through veneration of Saint Stephen, the first Christian martyr. Steffen is the standard form in Danish and Norwegian as well as parts of northern Germany, existing alongside the standard German form Stefan and the broader English form Stephen.
