Stella is a Latin name meaning star, derived from the classical Latin word stella. It was used as a literary name in the 16th century, most notably by the poet Philip Sidney, who addressed his sonnet sequence Astrophel and Stella to a woman by this name, and it came into broader use as a given name during the 19th century.
