Teddy

Teddy is an English pet form of Edward, which derives from the Old English elements ead, meaning wealth or fortune, and weard, meaning guard or protector. It also functions as a diminutive of Theodore, from the Greek Theodoros, combining theos, meaning god, and doron, meaning gift. The name gained widespread affectionate use in the early twentieth century, partly through association with United States President Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname Teddy also inspired the popular stuffed toy bear.
