Teddy

Teddy is an English diminutive of Edward, which derives from the Old English elements ead, meaning wealth or fortune, and weard, meaning guard. It has also long served as a pet form of Theodore, from the Greek Theodoros, combining theos, meaning god, and doron, meaning gift. The name became widely associated with United States president Theodore Roosevelt, whose nickname Teddy inspired the naming of the stuffed toy bear known as the teddy bear. Edmund and Edwin are related names sharing the same Old English ead element.
