Therese is the German and Scandinavian form of Theresa, a name of uncertain ancient origin most likely derived from the Greek toponym Therasia, referring to the Greek island of that name or possibly meaning harvester from the Greek verb therizein. The name was popularized across Catholic Europe largely through the veneration of Saint Teresa of Ávila, the influential sixteenth-century Spanish mystic and reformer. The French form Thérèse gained particular prominence through Saint Thérèse of Lisieux, the beloved nineteenth-century Carmelite nun known as the Little Flower.
