Timothy

Timothy comes from the Greek name Timotheos, formed from the elements timē, meaning honor or respect, and theos, meaning god, giving the overall sense of one who honors God. The name appears in the New Testament as that of a companion and disciple of the apostle Paul, to whom two of the epistles are addressed, which secured its adoption throughout the Christian world. It entered English use through the Latin form Timotheus and became widely popular in the English-speaking world from the 18th century onward. Related forms include Timoteo in Italian and Spanish, Timothée in French, and the short forms Tim and Timo.
