Tim is a short form of Timothy, which derives from the ancient Greek name Timotheos, composed of the elements time, meaning honor or respect, and theos, meaning god, giving the overall sense of one who honors God. The name was borne by Saint Timothy, a first-century companion and disciple of the Apostle Paul, which helped establish it across Christian Europe.
