Timotheus

Timotheus is the Latinized form of the Greek name Timotheos, composed of the elements time, meaning honour or respect, and theos, meaning god, giving the overall sense of one who honours God. It was borne by a companion and disciple of the Apostle Paul, addressed in two of the New Testament epistles, which spread the name throughout the Christian world. The form remained in learned and ecclesiastical Latin use through the medieval period and persists as a rare given name in German and Dutch contexts. The more widely used modern equivalents are Timothy in English and Timoteo in Italian and Spanish.
