Tomas

Tomas is a form of the Aramaic name Toma, meaning twin, which passed into Greek as Thomas and spread throughout Europe via the New Testament apostle Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus. The name gained further medieval popularity through the veneration of Saint Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, and the influential theologian Saint Thomas Aquinas. Tomas serves as the standard rendering in Swedish, Norwegian, and Lithuanian, while closely related forms include the Icelandic Tómas, the Irish and Spanish Tomás, the Czech and Slovak Tomáš, the Catalan Tomàs, and the Scottish Gaelic Tòmas.
