Tristram is the English form of the name borne by the legendary Cornish hero of medieval romance, better known in French and continental tradition as Tristan. The name's ultimate origin is debated: it is most commonly derived from a Pictish or Brittonic source, possibly connected to the Old Welsh element drust or dryst meaning noise or tumult, though its form was influenced by association with the Latin word tristis, meaning sad, likely because of the character's tragic love story with Iseult. The tale of Tristram and Iseult became one of the most celebrated narratives of the Middle Ages, spread widely through works by poets such as Béroul and Gottfried von Strassburg.
