Wat is an English medieval short form of Walter, a name of Germanic origin combining the elements wald, meaning rule or power, and heri, meaning army. It was a common familiar form in England during the Middle Ages, borne notably by Wat Tyler, the leader of the English Peasants' Revolt of 1381. The full form Walter remains widespread across European languages, appearing as Gautier in French, Gualtiero in Italian, and Valdemaras in Lithuanian.
